My chain is also rusty on the inside, annoys me so much I bought a brass brush to scrub it. I am personally against chain oilers on modern x ring chains that don't need it for internal lubrication as you are just flinging oil around. I think the solution is regular meticulous cleaning or an aftermarket chain with a gold finish.

The internal parts of the chain may not need oil, and won't get it anyway if the x-rings are in good condition, but surely the external roller to sprocket interface will benefit from some oil which may help to reduce sprocket tooth wear.
